Blueberry tall(Vaccinium corymbosum L.),
called American blueberry - a species of the heather family (Ericaceae). The bush grows to a maximum of 2.5 m, the stems are strongly branched in the upper part, flowers collected in clusters, bloom from April to May, pollinated by bees and bumblebees.
Fruit ripen from mid-July to September. They are much more larger than blueberries, tasty and high in nutritional value. They are rich in sugars, mineral acids, mineral salts, pectin and vitamins. They are suitable for consumption raw, as a dessert or in the form of jam.
The tall blueberry bush has a well-developed root system, in addition to the main roots, it has a well-developed system of thin roots
Has high demands when it comes to soil type. Requires acidic soils, with a pH of 3.5-4 or more, the best soils are peat with an acidic environment, with well-drained waters with low salinity and soloism. Irrigation is necessary on light soils. The plant can withstand temperatures down to -25° С
Soil preparation and planting. In amateur conditions, cultivation should look like as follows - under each seedling dig a hole with a depth of approx. 40 cm and 50 cm wide and filled with acidic peat, seedlings can be planted at a distance of 2.5m x 1m apart. On plantations, deep grooves are selected, they are filled with a mixture of sawdust and the soil is enriched with acidic peat. Seedlings are planted at a distance of 3 m x 1 m (3300 units / ha), but now there is a trend to compaction in a row up to 0.80 cm.
Care The soil in the rows must be processed manually, between the rows it can be done mechanically. Important is the addition of sawdust to the rows or bark. This reduces the evaporation of water, enriches the soil with humus and increases its acidity. During the first few years after planting, only damaged shoots will need to be removed. After 7-8 years it is necessary to make a strong cut, if the plant is not pruned, then there will be a tendency to small fruits of berries.
